I once tried contact lenses. The problem was trying to install the things. After an hour of no progress the doctor gave up. If I try again, I’ll get the 2 week type so I’ll have lots of time to try to extricate them before having to get it done on an emergency basis.

What percentage of people CAN’T get them in no matter how hard they try?

Thanks to everyone for all of the feedback. I will post again regarding my “trials” in the quest for better vision to hear with. I did email my new eye doctor with a link to this article and he thanked me for my kind words at our next appointment. I encouraged him to use my article in an effort to educate his colleagues. We are still tweaking my prescription and trying different things, as I do miss my contacts so. I miss them when I star gaze, as eyeglasses don’t give the needed correction to one’s peripheral vision and I want to see all the stars clearly at once. You just can’t get around the fact that sight is better with contacts vs. glasses, so I will give it my all.

Hi Michele,
I missed the excellent post since I was out of town. I had the same experience. Used to wear contacts for years and saw better with them than glasses. Now that I’m in my fifties I’ve transitioined to tri-focals, which I see well with. I haven’t looked back. Yeah– you can’t snorkel with trifocals, but that’s a once in a blue moon for me kind of thing anyway.

Excellent post, Michele. I am also in my forties and last year stopped wearing contacts to try eyeglasses. My eye doctor keeps warning me that bifocals are in my future! I thought getting adjusted back to eyeglasses would help me to adjust to the bifocals I’ll be needing soon. I really miss wearing contact lenses, though and I hadn’t thought about the middle distance needed for lipreading. I’m going to print out your post and take it with my eye doctor when I visit him next to see if he thinks the approach you’re trying will work for me. Keep us updated.

Exactly, I go through hard time with interpreter who is not certificate and my vision glasses is not accurate. I waste $$ Need to prove with Eye Professional don’t really understand about hearing loss or deaf people lost of track of lipread.
My vision is over 2+ pretty bad.

That’s an excellent point about the doctor that “gets” it. Too many in the medical profession just don’t get it, especially in multidisciplinary approach. Show this to him, and encourage him to publish it in the journals that his specialty reads.
